Because you asked: What is reiki?

Updated: Jul 10, 2023

I get this question a lot, even more lately. I remember when I didn’t know what reiki was. I’m a pretty adventurous and open minded person, so I just asked about it, and gave it a try. Knowing me, there was probably a special or something. That being said, I know a lot of people don’t know what to expect, and feel like they have to have some prior knowledge in order to feel comfortable. I totally get that. So here is my best attempt at explaining reiki.

My Most recent experience receiving reiki.

As a reiki master, I turn to my colleagues when I need some healing. Recently, I contracted covid. Having the health issues that I do, it was not an easy road for me. In addition to all of the complications with my asthma, I had intense pressure in my head. It wasn’t like a regular sinus headache. It made it so that I couldn’t think straight. I turned to my colleague to get some reiki. After days of no relief, Jill was able to get the energy to move through my body, and the pressures equalized. I felt better immediately, and I credit that treatment with setting me on the right path to recovery.

What and Why.

Reiki is energy healing. We have energy running through our bodies, and what many people can’t envisage is that the energy that runs through us also runs in and out of us. So while energy is running through our bodies, it is also being depleted, and restored. Your first inclination is probably to think about food; we eat food and gain energy, and in turn we process food, and use energy. True, but we expend energy in so many other ways as well. Think about a parent loving a child. When we have babies, we just love them, and they readily absorb that love. This is also an energetic exchange. When we listen to someone, we are taking in and processing their thoughts and feelings. This also takes up energy. Then we do that with someone else, or we sleep, or we meditate, exercise, etc, and we restore that energy. We can walk through grass barefoot, and bring back our energy.

Many times, we get blockages, and energy doesn’t flow as easily through certain areas of our bodies. This can be caused by a number of things. In fact, we should expect that everyone will have times when their energy isn’t flowing as freely through all areas of their bodies as others. At times, we are able to allow the process of innate healing to do its thing, but other times, we need help. That’s where reiki, and some other healing practices come in.

What to expect.

Many people assume it’s like a massage, and there are many massage therapists who incorporate reiki into their treatments. Side note: it’s amazing. What makes this different in the practical sense is that, during

reiki, you are fully clothed. You can feel energy flowing through you. Some people describe it as heat or waves. I can feel a pulling sensation, and sometimes I get cold, but overall I feel intensely relaxed. The most common response I get is I feel lighter.

In my practice, with consent, I touch the head, shoulders, knees, toes, elbows and hands. I don’t have to touch the person at all, I can even do reiki remotely. I know it sounds like that couldn’t work, but I have had remote reiki myself on several occasions, and it is incredible how the sensations are the same.

Quantum physics has an explanation for it, but I’ll spare you for now. Some people who have experienced different types of trauma, are unable to be touched, but if the person is comfortable with it, I find it’s easier for them if they know where I am. It is so important that you, the patient, feel supported, so we can do whatever we need to do to accommodate your level of comfort.

What might be different about my treatment.

All practitioners have their own style. It all works, but we all have different gifts, and the way we integrate them makes us unique and authentic. I like to ask the angels for their help and guidance before starting. I also make sure that you know that you are free to ask questions, or adjust your position, and some people even need to talk through their sessions. I do have a specific order that I do things in, but if I feel pulled to change something, I will. I almost always incorporate a Tibetan singing bowl at the end, and sometimes I

might put a crystal under your pillow, or under the table. Lastly, I'm an intuitive coach, and medium. Sometimes a quick message comes through, or I will be able to pinpoint some feelings you might be having. By using all of my gifts, I find my clients get a very holistic experience.

Love and Light,

Maria
