Whatever Happened to Rest Cures?

Updated: Jul 7, 2023

I remember reading short stories in grade school and high school where the character would be prescribed to rest, basically to go on a vacation. How amazing would it be if the world worked like this . . . for everyone?! In the past five years we have found that finding any sort of way to get away from your everyday, and rejuvenate is important and beneficial.

My favorite short trips are to the local beaches. We live in a suburb of Chicago, very close to the Indiana and Michigan Dunes. Without traffic, we can be at a beach in less than an hour. We have become very good at knowing exactly what to bring, jumping in the car and going to the beach for a day. We have two energetic boys, and the beach engaged them in a way that nothing else has. Well, maybe Minecraft or Roblox, but, you know, they do that all the time. We love being gently rocked by the waves, laying in the sun, picking up pretty rocks and shells, or building cool castles. We have a pass to the local waterpark as well, but it is nothing like leaving our town, and sitting in the sand all day. It's a total recharge.

About five years ago, we started renting a place for a few nights, and going to a different beach everyday. It has become our little family tradition to mark the end of summer. It's our last ditch effort to get ready for the school year ahead. We aren't big into fast food, so this is a great option for us. We bring simple things to make, and sometimes we even throw something in the crockpot to cook all day, so that it's ready for us when we get back. We don't need a fancy place, just something clean, and comfortable.

There was a time when even our small, inexpensive vacations were financially straining for us, but we kept on searching and we found a way, even if only for a day. Life is different now. We kept working towards what we wanted our lives to look like, and every year, our travels get better and better. Do what you can. You don't have to be rich to enjoy a nice relaxing rejuvenating day. What I wish for you is that you are able to get the space you need, while experiencing the beauty of nature in whatever way vibes with you. Rest assured, it will improve your life.

Give it a try! Here are some tips for beaches, and other small trips.

  • Check for reviews of beaches, especially if you have physical challenges. Some beaches have steep hills you have to descend and climb out of. If you are in the Dunes area, Washington Beach and New Buffalo Beach are pretty flat.

  • Check to see if you need a parking pass. Most of the time this info is on the state's website.

  • Want to rent a condo or house? We have used Airbnb, but we know many people who have used VRBO, or ask around, and see if anyone knows someone who rents their place out.

  • Not a fan of beaches? How about finding a cute little city with a charming riverwalk? Chicago, Indianapolis, and Milwaukee all have nice ones.

  • How about a day at the zoo or aquarium? Check for free days. Zoos are great in the fall when it isn't so hot.

  • Go for an easy hike in a state park, and pack a picnic. We love Matthiessen and Starved Rock, IL.

  • Go camping. I admit this is not my jam, but some people just love it.
